Supporting Sam and Zahara

Sam smiles and puts his arm around his friend Zahara, who is in a stander with large wheels. The left side features a white circle with a blue outline, and the words Supporting Sam and Zahara and thousands of children in the community.
We partnered with the other County Boards of DD in Southwest Ohio to buy billboards to support Developmental Disabilities Awareness around our region.

One design features Sam and Zahara, both students at Margaret B. Rost School.

Sam, 20, has been attending Rost since 2009 and enjoys drama and cooking classes. He also loves to read and is a star when learning months and days of the week, says his teacher Jodi Wessel. “My favorite thing about having Sam in my class is how he talks in his low voice and how animated he is when he is signing or telling us all good morning,” she said.

Zahara, 18, has been attending Rost since 2013 and enjoys books, being read to, music and dancing. Some of her favorite activities are the interactive smart board with music, as well as coloring and communicating with staff using her iPad, says her teacher Kathi Spiller. She also volunteers once a week stocking supplies at a local hospital.

“Zahara loves being around people, joining in with the activity or just observing,” Spiller says. “She enjoys life, has a wonderful sense of humor and is one amazing young lady!”

Rost Principal Duerk Zinn adds his favorite things about these two students are Zahara’s never-ending smile and Sam’s genuine love for school.

The billboards featuring Sam and Zahara are located on Reading Road, near Whittier, and Colerain Avenue, near Cross County Highway.

You can also see billboards throughout October and November in Butler, Clermont, Greene, Montgomery and Warren counties.
