School conversations

As you will recall, in June we began a community-wide conversation about how we support students with developmental disabilities, including those who attend HCDDS-operated schools. We had great, productive conversations with a wide range of stakeholders, including parents of current and former students of HCDDS-operated schools, parents who chose local district schools, and others.

Over the summer, HCDDS board members considered the feedback from the first two public conversations and engaged in an in-depth examination of the available trends and data. We're now continuing and expanding this conversation as we enter the fall.

At the end of October, we'll host three separate conversations with our HCDDS-operated school staff, with parents, and with staff of local school districts. At each of these conversations, we'll discuss local trends in educating students with significant disabilities and share important data about the history of the two HCDDS-operated schools. We have enlisted an independent, professional facilitator to engage participants in a conversation about the implications of the data and trends.

The conversation with staff of our schools will be held on October 20. The conversation with parents of students with disabilities, both in our school and in their local districts, will be held on October 23 from 10 a.m.-noon. You can see a flier with more information here. The conversation with non-HCDDS school district personnel will be held on October 26 from 9-11 a.m. You can see the flier with more information here.

As I said when we first announced this community engagement process, we are committed to conducting an open and transparent conversation about the schools and we believe that engaging a group of diverse participants is the best approach. I want to assure you that no decisions about the schools have been made. This will be an ongoing conversation, and we'll have several more stakeholder conversations in the near future. I'll keep you updated throughout these conversations and share details about future sessions.
