As 2016 draws to a close, I’d like to take this opportunity to reflect on the past year. Our system of supporting individuals with developmental disabilities continues to undergo major changes to the traditional way services have been delivered for the past 40 years. Despite these changes and the uncertainty about the future, the dedication and care exhibited by our staff has been incredible.

New MUI hotline - Aug 8, 2016

The new MUI Reporting Hotline is active.  This reporting line will allow staff, providers, and/or others to report an MUI through a voicemail system; there will also be the option to speak with a HCDDS staff if immediate assistance is needed 24 hours a day/7 days per week.

New DD bills now law - Jul 25, 2016

On July 13, Ohio Gov. John Kasich signed two important DD-related bills into law at St. Joseph Home in Sharonville. One officially removes the "R" word from the Ohio Revised Code, and the other relates to direct nursing and early intervention services.

I wanted to address them here in case others have the same questions. Basically, the situation is that we have had no revenue growth in several years and have experienced significant reductions.

Ohio became the first state in the nation to offer STABLE Accounts, made possible by the federal Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act. These accounts allow individuals with disabilities the opportunity to save and invest money without losing eligibility for certain public benefits programs.

The Board of HCDDS, with direction from the Hamilton County Commissioners, has chosen to publicize a formal Request for Qualifications (RFQ) seeking interest from any provider to become the operator of the adult centers in Hamilton County. Today, May 26, the process started with the release of the RFQ notice by the Hamilton County Purchasing Department.

In several other counties, community providers of services have assumed operation of adult centers, which is called privatization. In the last few weeks, we have stepped up the exploration of a community agency coming in to operate the centers.
